Candida Metabolic & Vitamins Test also called Organic Acids Test (OAT)
What is the Candida Metabolic & Vitamins Test?
The Candida Metabolic & Vitamins Test, also known as the Organic Acids Test, or OAT test for short, measures over 70 markers that give clues to many aspects of the body’s functions, markers that cannot be tested using standard pathology testing.
Why might I need the OAT test?
For people with chronic illness but for whom standard testing does not reveal a cause, the OAT test can assess many aspects of intestinal function and/or dysfunction. Symptoms include digestive issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, acid reflux, and ulcerative colitis; mental health problems like depression, ADHD, and anxiety; chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and other autoimmune conditions; sleep disturbances, headaches, inflammation and pain, chemical sensitivities, mold toxicity, obesity and difficulty losing weight, skin issues, and many other conditions.
What does the test show?
The organic acids test examines chemicals compounds which are the breakdown products of metabolism in the body which are excreted in the urine. Biochemical pathways can be blocked, leading to altered levels of organic acids, typically too high. The pathways are used for detoxification, fatty acid metabolism, production of energy, neurotransmitter metabolism, amino acid levels, and nutritional status.
Organic acids are also produced when bacteria, mold, and/or yeasts are present, causing gut issues, candida overgrowth, or mold toxicity.
Test results evaluate things like the function of the citric acid cycle, a measure of how the body makes energy; carbohydrate metabolism which can be related to poor blood sugar control or low energy; how well the body’s folate metabolism is working; oxidative stress, one of the factors behind inflammation; the presence of bacterial and/or Candida infections which can cause digestive issues, skin problems, fatigue, anxiety, and other emotional and physical health issues; fat metabolism, which could be impaired if you are having problems losing weight or feel tired; and measurements of the metabolites of neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline, which are related to sleep disorders like insomnia as well as anxiety and depression.
How do I do the OAT test?
Luckily, no needles are involved! It is an at-home test that collects the first urine of the morning, prior to eating or drinking. The sample is then frozen and shipped to the lab. It is recommended to avoid certain foods such as apples, grapes, raisins, pears, and cranberries for 48 hours prior to the collection, as well as certain supplements, including Echinacea, reishi mushrooms, and ribose supplements.
What happens after the test?
Ordering the test through my affiliate link gives you a discount from the regular price. Due to the complexity of the test, you will need to schedule a one-hour consultation with me. Once the test results are available, I will review them. It is a lengthy process as there are over 70 markers evaluated, and it takes a great deal of analysis to determine the interrelationships between the individual results.
How do I order?
During a consultation, we will discuss your health issues and determine which testing makes sense for you. If we decide that an OAT test would be helpful, you can use this link to order. Pricing includes my analysis of your test results as well as a one-hour follow-up consultation to discuss the findings.
